ABIT / GeForce Background:

ABIT has long since catered to the overclocking crowd with top of the line motherboards rich in features and functionality. Every motherboard they have made holds a special place in history, and many stories can be told about experiences with these boards over the years.

ABIT has since then branched out, and now produces a line of NVIDIA based video cards. They started with the GF2GTS and GF2MX, and have recently released their GF3 based Siluro video card.

This review is on their Siluro GeForce2 MX 400 64MB video card. While it isn't the fastest around, it certainly holds a niche for the user who can't shell out a couple hundred dollars for a GeForce3. The GeForce2 technology is still thriving in today's market, and with the recent release of Titanium Series GF2 & GF3 chips, it doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.

For more information on GeForce2 MX video card specifications and chip features, you can check out our old GeForce2 MX Roundup from January 2001.

ABIT Siluro Card Layout:

This MX400 Siluro has only a VGA out, which is probably all that the average user needs. Their T400 card has an additional TV out, which might be useful for people who like to playback DVD's through their computer. The card is a very dark brown, almost black in color, a welcome change from the traditional green that most PC components are.  This card runs at 200MHZ core and features 64MB of RAM using the 128-bit memory interface, giving it an advantage over most GF2MX cards that only have 32MB. The MX200 cards only run at 175MHz core speed and only utilize the 64-bit memory interface. This particular card has 6ns EliteMT brand RAM. Lastly, this MX400 card utilizes a passive heat sink on the GPU, which for an MX chip is pretty much all you need since they don't get that hot unless you attempt some serious overclocking. Being passive, there is no noise or any fan that could die and cause overheating problems.
